Actress Sheena Chohan played a prominent role at the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) 2026, moderating two significant discussions on the future of storytelling, cinema, and cultural exchange. During the festival, Sheena also met Ashish Shelar, Maharashtra’s Minister for Cultural Affairs, as filmmakers, artists, festival directors, and cultural leaders from around the world gathered in Mumbai.

On June 16, Sheena moderated the panel discussion, “Are Micro-Dramas the Fast Fashion of Cinema?”, featuring producer Sameer Modi, actress Archana Kavi, actor Ujjwal Chopra, and German director Rafael, known for his work in the micro-drama space. The conversation explored the rise of short-form storytelling and the challenge of maintaining artistic depth in an era shaped by shrinking attention spans. Drawing from her experience as an actor, Sheena emphasized that while formats may evolve, strong storytelling, character development, and emotional authenticity remain essential.

On June 18, she led the roundtable “Many Forms, One Vision: Celebrating Diversity in Film Festivals.” This inaugural roundtable gathered a panel of veteran curators and festival directors, including Anand Varadaraj, Deepak Beshra, Premendra Mazumdar, Nilotpal Mazumdar, Shaikh Khaja Vali, Patricia Sanchez Mora, and Prakash Magdum, Managing Director of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).

Highlighting MIFF’s international participation, with representatives from 46 countries, Sheena spoke about the unique role film festivals play in fostering cultural understanding and connecting audiences with diverse voices from around the world.

Speaking during the discussion, Sheena said: “When we celebrate diversity in film festivals, we celebrate the power of storytelling to connect people across cultures, languages, and perspectives, ignite imagination, inspire understanding, and uplift culture. Though the stories may differ, they share a common purpose: to broaden our view of the world. Film festivals allow us to see the world through many different eyes, with the purpose of opening our minds.”

Reflecting on her own journey, Sheena recalled that her film festival journey began with a Best Actress nomination at the Shanghai International Film Festival. Since then, she has been part of numerous independent films in leading roles across multiple languages, with her work travelling to film festivals around the world. She also reflected on having films showcased at international festivals including Busan, Dubai, Shanghai, and Kolkata, and spoke about the value of global platforms in supporting meaningful storytelling.

A key theme of the discussion was the growing challenge independent and diverse films face in securing visibility and distribution. Participants agreed that film festivals remain vital spaces for discovering new voices, fostering cross-cultural dialogue, and celebrating artistic excellence.

Across both sessions, Sheena underscored the enduring responsibility of cinema to entertain, inspire, expand perspectives, and contribute to cultural dialogue. Through her moderation and insights, Sheena Chohan reaffirmed the power of storytelling to connect people across borders and cultures.
