Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi (an autonomous body of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India), will organize the National Theatre Festival 2026 on 15 July 2026 at 6.00 p.m., featuring synchronized performances across all States and Union Territories of India, presented simultaneously nationwide. The festival marks the occasion of Mahakavi Kalidasa Jayanti and commemorates the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram.

Conceptualized by Dr Sandhya Purecha, Chairman, Sangeet Natak Akademi, the festival is centred on the theme, “Vande Mataram – The Spirit of Patriotism through Indian Theatre”, celebrating India’s rich theatrical heritage while promoting the ideals of national unity, cultural diversity, and patriotism.

Envisioned as one of the largest coordinated theatre initiatives in the country, the festival will feature more than 150 productions across India, presented in over 39 Indian languages and dialects. Each production will interpret the theme through its own regional, linguistic, and cultural identity while reinforcing the vision of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ and ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’.

The festival will bring together more than 4,000 theatre artists and over 150 institutions, including State Akademies, State Departments of Culture, Zonal Cultural Centres, universities, theatre repertories, drama schools, and cultural organizations. The programme will showcase a wide range of theatrical traditions, including folk, traditional, modern, puppet, musical, and street theatre, with active participation from youth groups, school theatre groups, Divyangjan artists, transgender artists, and community theatre groups.

Through live performances, digital streaming, and social media outreach, the festival is expected to reach more than 20 lakh viewers in India and abroad, further enhancing the visibility of Indian theatre and its enduring cultural legacy.

The National Theatre Festival 2026 aims to strengthen cultural unity, encourage youth participation in the performing arts, celebrate India’s multilingual heritage, and reaffirm theatre as a powerful medium of cultural expression, social cohesion, and nation-building.
