National, March 6, 2026: In a major moment for Indian cinema, the critically acclaimed Manipuri film Boong is set to return to theatres across select cities in India on March 6, 2026. The film, produced by Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Suitable Pictures, created history as the first Indian film to win a BAFTA Award in the Best Children’s and Family Film category.

India’s leading cinema exhibitor PVR INOX will bring the film back to the big screen, giving audiences another opportunity to experience the widely celebrated story in a theatrical setting. The film had originally released in India in September last year with a limited run in select theatres.

From Global Festivals to a Historic BAFTA Win

Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, Boong first premiered at the globally renowned Toronto International Film Festival, where it received significant attention from audiences and critics alike. Following its world premiere, the film travelled across several international film festivals, earning widespread acclaim and numerous honours.

The film’s remarkable global journey culminated in a historic victory at the BAFTA Awards, where it won in the Best Children’s and Family Film category — marking a proud milestone as the first Indian film ever to receive the prestigious honour in this category.

A Moving Story of Innocence and Hope

At its heart, Boong tells a deeply emotional and universal story about childhood innocence and family bonds. The narrative revolves around a young boy named Boong who wishes to surprise his mother with a special gift. In his simple yet heartfelt understanding of love, he believes the best gift he can offer is to bring back his absentee father.

What begins as a hopeful quest soon turns into a journey that challenges Boong’s innocence and reshapes his understanding of family and life. As he searches for his father, his world begins to unravel, leading to emotional discoveries and ultimately an unexpected yet meaningful resolution.

Through its tender storytelling and authentic portrayal of life in Manipur, the film beautifully captures the emotional landscape of a child navigating complex realities.

Director Lakshmipriya Devi Reflects on the Film’s Journey

Sharing her thoughts on the film’s theatrical re-release, director Lakshmipriya Devi described Boong as a deeply personal project that reflects her memories and experiences of Manipur.

“Boong is my bittersweet memory of Manipur. From the writing stage up until now, as we stand on the cusp of a re-release, it has been a deeply personal journey. Winning the BAFTA was and still is surreal; even memory loss wouldn’t make me forget that moment!” she said.

Expressing her excitement about the film returning to theatres, she added that the landscapes and emotional depth of Manipur deserve to be experienced on the big screen.

“I am truly happy that Boong is returning to cinemas. Manipur is meant to be experienced on the big screen, and I hope people get the chance to watch it in theatres this time.”

PVR INOX Champions Diverse Indian Stories

Speaking about the re-release, Niharika Bijli, Lead Strategist at PVR INOX, highlighted the importance of supporting unique and meaningful cinema.

“It’s such a privilege to be re-releasing Boong in India, a film that has not only earned international acclaim but also created history with its BAFTA win. We originally had a limited release of the film last year in September. At PVR INOX, we remain committed to championing diverse cinematic voices. Boong’s re-release is our way of giving audiences across India the opportunity to discover and celebrate this remarkable film in the immersive theatrical environment.”

Re-Release in Select Cinemas Across India

The BAFTA-winning film will return to the big screen starting March 6, 2026, in select cinemas across India. The re-release is being handled by distributor Anil Thadani through AA Films Pvt. Ltd..

Audiences interested in watching the film can check booking details and theatre listings through the official PVR INOX app, the company’s website, and its social media channels.

With its powerful storytelling, global recognition, and historic BAFTA win, Boong stands as a landmark achievement for Indian regional cinema — and its return to theatres offers movie lovers a rare opportunity to witness a truly special film on the big screen once again.
