World Environment Day has evolved beyond symbolic tree plantation exercises for India’s real estate sector. Developers are increasingly using the occasion to drive meaningful environmental engagement among residents, employees, and communities. From large-scale afforestation commitments and community-led green initiatives to sustainability workshops and environmental awareness programmes, the focus is shifting towards creating long-term ecological impact and embedding sustainability into everyday living.

Omaxe’s Large-Scale Green Commitment

Taking one of the most ambitious pledges this World Environment Day, Omaxe Metro City in Lucknow announced a plantation drive targeting 10,000 trees and saplings across its 690-acre integrated township. The initiative reflects a broader industry shift where developers are looking beyond infrastructure creation and focusing on building environmentally resilient communities. Significantly, the company has also committed to the long-term maintenance and preservation of the saplings, recognising that sustainability extends far beyond planting drives.

Mohit Goel, Managing Director, Omaxe Group, said, “At Omaxe, we believe that building townships is not only about creating physical infrastructure, but also about nurturing environments where communities can truly thrive. This plantation drive reflects our larger vision of responsible and future-ready urban development. As cities continue to expand, preserving ecological balance becomes equally important.”

Ambience Focuses on Community Participation

At Ambience Creacions in Gurugram, World Environment Day became an opportunity to bring residents and employees together through a plantation drive aimed at enhancing biodiversity and green cover within the development. By encouraging collective participation, the initiative sought to reinforce environmental awareness while fostering a sense of responsibility among stakeholders. The effort forms part of the group’s larger focus on community-led sustainability and responsible urban development.

Arjun Gehlot, Director, Ambience Group, said, “Sustainability and responsible development have always been at the core of our philosophy. As part of our CSR commitment, we believe it is important to actively contribute towards environmental conservation and engage our community in meaningful initiatives. The plantation drive on World Environment Day is a small yet significant step towards creating a healthier and greener ecosystem for future generations.”

CRC Group Promotes Behavioural Change

Moving beyond plantation activities, CRC Group used the occasion to promote sustainability through awareness-led engagement at CRC The Flagship in Noida. Activities such as seed ball making, sustainability pledges, recycling initiatives, and energy-saving awareness programmes encouraged employees and tenants to adopt environmentally responsible practices.

The approach highlights an emerging trend within the sector where developers are focusing on behavioural change and community participation as critical components of sustainability strategies. Rather than limiting sustainability to physical infrastructure, developers are increasingly working to build environmentally conscious communities.

Satish Garg, Founder & MD, CRC Group, said, “Sustainability is not merely a responsibility; it is a shared commitment that requires collective action. At CRC Group, we believe that meaningful change begins with small, conscious steps taken consistently by individuals and communities. Through initiatives such as these, we aim to foster greater awareness and encourage environmentally responsible practices that contribute towards a healthier and more sustainable future for generations to come.”

Prateek Group Takes Sustainability Home

Prateek Group, through its Prateek Foundation’s Aakar initiative, brought environmental action closer to residents’ homes by organising a gardening workshop titled ‘Harit Ghar’ at Prateek Grand City. The workshop educated participants on vertical gardening, soil care, and plant selection while providing starter kits to help residents establish their own balcony gardens.

The initiative reflects a growing emphasis on empowering communities to embrace sustainable practices in their daily lives rather than limiting environmental action to occasional events. By making sustainability accessible and practical, developers are encouraging long-term engagement with environmental causes.

Prateek Tiwari, Managing Director, Prateek Group, said, “World Environment Day is a reminder that the responsibility for a healthier planet begins close to home, sometimes as close as a balcony. Harit Ghar was our way of making that idea real and actionable for our residents. We wanted families and children to leave not just with awareness, but with something living in their hands.”

SPJ Group Strengthens Employee-Led Sustainability

SPJ Group marked the day with an employee-led plantation drive at Atul Kataria Chowk in Gurugram, underscoring how environmental initiatives are increasingly becoming part of corporate culture. The participation of employees across departments, alongside senior leadership, reinforced the company’s sustainability-first approach and demonstrated how organisations are integrating environmental responsibility into workplace engagement.

The initiative also reflected the growing recognition that meaningful environmental impact requires collective action from all stakeholders, including employees, residents, and the wider community.

Mitul Jain, Managing Director, SPJ Group, said, “Sustainability is deeply embedded in our organizational philosophy and guides the way we approach growth and community engagement. Initiatives such as this plantation drive reflect our commitment to creating a positive environmental impact while encouraging collective responsibility. We believe that every community and environment we become a part of should benefit from our presence and efforts.”

Nimbus Group Calls for Sustainability Beyond Symbolism

Furthermore, Nimbus Group highlighted the need to view sustainability as a long-term development philosophy rather than an annual exercise. The company emphasised that environmental responsibility must be embedded into the planning and design process itself, shaping the way communities are conceived and built.

Yamini Agarwal, Director (Marketing & Communications), Nimbus Group, said, “World Environment Day often arrives with familiar conversations about planting trees, reducing waste and protecting natural resources. But the larger question is whether sustainability exists only as an annual reminder or as a principle that shapes our everyday decisions. The future of our cities will be determined by the choices we make long before a building is completed. Sustainability cannot be treated as a feature that is added at the end of a project. It needs to be the very foundation of it.”

Sustainability Becomes a Core Real Estate Priority

As climate resilience and responsible urbanisation gain importance, developers are increasingly recognising that sustainability cannot remain confined to project design alone. Whether through large-scale plantation commitments, environmental education programmes, community workshops, employee engagement initiatives, or sustainability-led planning philosophies, the sector is adopting a more holistic approach to environmental stewardship.

This World Environment Day, the common thread across developers was clear: sustainability is no longer a standalone activity but an ongoing commitment that shapes how communities are built, managed, and experienced. Through initiatives that encourage participation, behavioural change, and long-term environmental thinking, the real estate sector is steadily moving towards creating greener ecosystems that benefit both residents and future generations.
