Expressing his happiness over the international recognition, Ram Kamal Mukherjee said that receiving an award for a film made in his mother tongue makes the achievement particularly emotional.

He described Lokkhikantopur Local as a deeply personal project celebrating ordinary people, overlooked places and stories that reflect the realities of everyday life.

Speaking about sharing the honour with Kabir Khan, Mukherjee recalled interviewing the filmmaker during his earlier association with Stardust magazine. He praised Khan as a brilliant storyteller and said that sharing the recognition with someone of his stature made the occasion even more memorable.

Mukherjee also dedicated the award to producer Sangita Sinha, his directorial team and the IIFFT jury members for recognising the film’s storytelling and creative contribution.

He expressed hope that meaningful cinema would continue to find audiences regardless of production budgets, star power or language barriers.

From National Film Award for Ek Duaa to International Recognition

The Toronto recognition adds another significant chapter to Ram Kamal Mukherjee’s filmmaking journey.

In 2023, he won his first National Film Award for his Hindi short film Ek Duaa. The film established his credentials as a filmmaker committed to socially relevant themes and emotionally engaging narratives.

His journey from Cakewalk to Ek Duaa and now Lokkhikantopur Local reflects his continued interest in exploring human relationships, complex characters and stories rooted in Indian society.

With this latest international honour, Mukherjee further strengthens his position as a filmmaker bringing Indian stories to global audiences.

Lokkhikantopur Local is produced by Sangita Sinha under the banner of Angel Creations. Sinha, who also plays a pivotal acting role in the film, expressed immense pride in Mukherjee’s achievement.

She said the competition at the international festival was challenging, particularly for regional cinema projects that often operate with financial limitations.

According to Sinha, the film’s success demonstrates that compelling content and powerful performances can overcome financial constraints and connect with audiences.

She congratulated Ram Kamal Mukherjee for bringing international recognition to the film and acknowledged the dedication of the entire team behind the project.
